CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM)– The seven puppies abandoned outside of the East Pennsboro Township Police Department are now in foster care.

East Pennsboro Township Police says the puppies were left in a milk crate on the stairs in front of the station last week. A surveillance photo shows a man walking toward the station with a milk crate. The next picture showed him walking away empty-handed.

Police said someone contacted them about puppies being found near the Susquehanna Perry Park area in Enola. Since they were taken away from their mother prematurely with no human care, they are considered abandoned.

“It was very kind of scary in the very beginning of it with with finding them care because if we didn’t find them another mother we might not be having the same conversation,” says Detective Anthony Fiore.

All seven puppies, five girls and two boys, are being nursed back to health at Davis Dog Farm. The rescue says they’ll DNA test the puppies for adoption, but they believe them to be German Shepherd mixed-breed. Although they have regained much of their health, they still have four weeks to go before being ready for adoption at 8-weeks-old.

“We are currently feeding them a mixture of formula and soaked puppy food. We blend that together and make it a kind of a mush, and then we put it in a round bowl for them, and they have started eating out of their bowl,” said Janea Davis, the executive director at Davis Dog Farm.

“We got them checked by a vet to make sure everything was good. A couple of them had upper respiratory infections. We had to give antibiotics again. One had trouble opening her eyes, so we had to give her oral antibiotics for those as well, but you know, just a lot of love and care, and they’re doing really well,” says co-executive director Emily Speck.

To legally surrender an animal, Davis suggests people reach out to rescues directly. They can also reach out to their local shelter or contact their dog warden or the police. She says in some surrenders Davis Dog Farm can keep the mother dog until her puppies are done nursing.

Police are still searching for the person who dropped the puppies off on their stairs to learn more about the situation and determine who should be charged.

Anyone with information about the person in the surveillance photos and/or the person who abandoned the puppies is asked to contact the East Pennsboro Township Police Department or Detective Anthony Fiore at 717-732-3633 Ext. 1620 or ANF@Eastpennsboropd.com.

Davis Dog Farm will post the puppies on their website and Facebook page when they’re ready for adoption.
