HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – One year after Harrisburg announced it made its final payment on a 25-year, multi-million dollar loan, Mayor Wanda Williams says the city remains in a solid financial spot.

At her annual ‘State of the City’ address, Williams announced she would seek re-election and said she plans to remove Harrisburg from “Act 47,” a designation some Pennsylvania cities fall under due to financial distress.

“This will close the chapter on a sad period in our city and open our doors on a new and exciting one,” Williams said.

That chapter includes new affordable housing, which is done with help from federal dollars.

“We are looking to transform the Hall Manor and Hoover home developments in
South Harrisburg,” Williams said. “This project will replace more than 220 units into a mixed-income space of opportunity.”

Such housing will also be built in Allison Hill.

Williams also bolstered her efforts to cut down on blighted buildings, saying dozens, including the Broad Street Market, are being repaired.
