Lancaster to receive $1 million to address climate change

LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) — The City of Lancaster is receiving $1 million from the U.S. Department of Forestry to address climate change.

As a result of the $1 million in funding from the Department of Forestry, Culliton Park on South Water Street will be getting 30 more trees planted.

Additionally, more trees are expected to be added in other city parks, in addition to being planted along the streets.

“We’re managing about 65 million gallons of rainwater annually through all of the green infrastructure in the city of Lancaster,” the City of Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace said. “And trees are part of that, which is why $1,000,000 investment is so important because without it, we would not be able to make as much progress as quickly as needed.”

Mayor Sorace went on to say that the funding will help to make neighborhoods cooler, help manage stormwater, and improve the resale value of various properties.

It should be noted that the City of Lancaster has a Climate Action Plan that it adopted back in 2018, which will also benefit from these funds.
