Deputies recover teen body in San Joaquin River in Fresno County
The body of a teen who never surfaced after getting in the San Joaquin River Sunday has been recovered.The coroner's office has identified the victim as 15-year-old Nixon Quinonez Guerra of San Jose.He was reported missing after going into the water on Sunday.The initial call came in around 4:30 pm in the area behind the Firebaugh Rodeo Grounds on 11th and Q Streets.Investigators say the boy was visiting his family when he went into the water to retrieve a ball and never resurfaced.Deputies say the teen did not know how to swim and was not wearing a life vest.
Yosemite National Park visitors will need a reservation every day until August
If you want to take in the impressive sights of Yosemite National Park, you'll soon need a reservation no matter what day you go.The park's new pilot program has been requiring reservations to be made online for weekends and holidays.However, starting July 1 through August 16, a reservation will be required every day.RELATED: New bus routes added from Fresno to Yosemite National Park this summerFrom August 17 to October 27, the system goes back to Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.Officials say the temporary reservation system will help manage congestion at the park, which they say the park has been dealing with for decades.
Close call of car in flames at Bass Lake captured on video
A close call at Bass Lake after a car caught fire was captured on video.Those visiting the lake in Madera County noticed smoke around 3 p.m. Saturday near the Willow Cove area and ran down a hill to see the car fire.Thankfully, homeowners and local law enforcement sprung into action to extinguish the flames before they spread to nearby homes.It's unclear how the fire started. The investigation is ongoing.
$2.6 million worth of drugs seized by CHP officers in Fresno County
Millions of dollars worth of drugs are off Central California streets after a discovery during a traffic stop.On Wednesday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol pulled over a car for a traffic violation on Interstate 5 north of Nees AvenueOfficers say the driver had no license.Before the vehicle was impounded, a K-9 officer found about 262 pounds of crystal meth, five pounds of fentanyl powder and two pounds of heroin.They also found suitcases and backpacks in the trunk with more drug packages.The drugs have an estimated street value of more than $2.6 million.Officers took 36-year-old Issac Abraham Sandoval Lopez of Portland, Oregon, into custody on various drug charges.
Basin Fire forces partial closure of Sierra National Forest
On Saturday, the U.S. Forest Service announced a partial closure of the forest because of the hazardous conditions of the fire.The video above is from an earlier story and will be updated.Starting on Sunday, June 30, parts of the Sierra National Forest will be closed. It's to keep people safe while firefighters work to gain ground on the fire. The closure will last until July 30."Ultimately that closure order is there for the protection of the public," said Mike Lindbery, a spokesperson for the Basin Fire. Motorcyclist killed, teenager arrested for DUI following crash in Fresno County
A man is dead after a late-night motorcycle crash in Fresno County.It happened after 9 p.m. Friday on Mount Whitney Avenue and East Street, near the city of Laton.The California Highway Patrol says a man on a motorcycle was traveling west on Mount Whitney when a 17-year-old boy driving a pick-up truck drove toward a stop sign on East Street.Officers say it is unknown if the teenager failed to stop or failed to yield, before he pulled out into the intersection.That's when investigators say the two collided.The motorcyclist died at the scene due to his injuries.Authorities say the boy was arrested for driving under the influence.

Man killed, 2-year-old injured after shooting in Atwater, police say
Police are investigating a deadly shooting that also injured a two-year-old child in Atwater.Around midnight, Atwater police were called out to a neighborhood off Castle Drive near Jasmine Avenue.They found a man with multiple gunshot wounds.Despite life-saving measures, he died.They also found a two-year-old child with a gunshot wound on their lower leg.The tiny patient was hospitalized.The toddler's condition is not known, but investigators say it appears the wound is not life-threatening.Atwater police are currently working on leads to track down a suspect.Anyone with information is asked to call the Atwater Police Department.
Mayor Dyer outlines process to find new police chief following Paco Balderrama's resignation
Fresno city officials are revealing more about the search for a new police chief just days after Paco Balderrama resigned.Action News spoke with Mayor Jerry Dyer about the search on Friday. Illegal Reedley Lab suspect files lawsuit against city
The man facing a federal three-count indictment for allegedly running an illegal lab in Reedley has now filed a lawsuit against the city.Court documents show David He is also taking legal action against Reedley Code Enforcement office Jesalyn Harper, Reedley Fire Chief Jeffrey Isaak and Fresno County assistant Public Health Director Joe Prado.David He alleges that Universal Meditech, which rented the lab in a Reedley warehouse in December 2022, was not in active business in March 2023, when the lab was discovered.RELATED: Everything we know about the illegal Reedley LabHe claims the city should have known this and that the company was only storing its assets at the warehouse.A Reedley City code enforcement officer and investigators found nearly 1,000 mice, COVID-19 and pregnancy tests, and blood samples inside that biotech lab.The lawsuit claims those were all stored safely and securely.Action News reached out to Reedley's city manager, who confirmed they were aware of the lawsuit.
No jail time for Fresno police officer who hit and killed pedestrian
A Fresno police officer was sentenced this week to one-year probation and 400 hours of community service for running over and killing a pedestrian.Officer Benito Soto pled no contest on Wednesday to vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence.Investigators say Soto was texting while driving his police car west on Fresno Street when he struck 51-year-old Jose Pulido on September 5th 2020.Authorities say the officer had the green light at the time and hit Pulido as he entered the crosswalk pushing a bicycle.Pulido died later at the hospital.The officer must complete at least 200 community service hours by September 26th.Soto also has a court hearing that same day to make sure he's completed that time.
