House fire in Yosemite Lakes spreads to vehicles and vegetation, officials say
Firefighters are working to figure out what sparked flames at a home in Yosemite Lakes that also spread to vehicles and vegetation.Crews from the Madera-Mariposa-Merced unit were first called out around 12:30 am Monday to a home on Corral Drive and Kings Canyon Court, near Coarsegold.They arrived to find the home engulfed in flames, along with several vehicles.Less than an acre of brush also burned in the blaze.PG&E was called out to shut off the power and deal with downed power lines.Crews were able to get the fire under control and will be working to put out any hot spots.The residents who lived in the home escaped the fire safely, but will now need to find a new place to live.
Historic 'The Palm and the Pine' landmark to be torn down for Highway 99 expansion
The future of a historic landmark in Madera County is up in the air."The Palm and the Pine," which represents the Heart of California and the split between Northern and Southern California, is expected to be torn down.Caltrans is planning to expand Highway 99 near Avenue 12 to six lanes in the coming years. The landmark has been there since the 1920's.The Historic Highway 99 Association of California says Caltrans is planning to plant new trees but does not plan to mark the historic location in any other way.They propose posting signs in both directions that mark the location and explain its significance as an alternative.To learn more about the efforts, head to historic99.org.
1 dead, 2 hospitalized after water rescue effort at Skaggs Bridge Park in Fresno County

The community turned out to celebrate Fresno State's lovable live mascot, Victor E. Bulldog IV.The Fresno State Alumni Association hosted a big bash for his second birthday on Saturday.There was a meet-and-greet opportunity with the popular pup at Campus Pointe near Fresno State.It was followed by a special screening of Disney-Pixar's "Inside Out 2."All proceeds from this event support the Victor E. Car chase leads at least 1000 pounds of meth seized in Mariposa County
A car pursuit led deputies to uncover a large drug bust in Mariposa County.The Mariposa County Sheriff's Office says it assisted the California Highway Patrol with a pursuit that entered Mariposa County.It eventually ended on Highway 140 near Indian Gulch Road after the vehicle crashed and the driver fled.The driver was not found, but over 200 pounds of meth were located inside the vehicle.That prompted the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office to do a follow-up investigation.Authorities served a search warrant at an undisclosed location in Mariposa County connected with the vehicle.During the search, a fully functioning meth lab was discovered.About more than 1,000 pounds of meth was seized.Deputies say the lab's size was estimated to be capable of producing as much as 800 pounds of product per week.The investigation is ongoing.
Families trying to stay cool as heat wave hits Central California
People across the Valley are doing what they can to stay safe during this heat wave."Today was about to be 100 degrees," said Angelo Gonzales of Fresno. Forward progress stopped on Watts Fire in Fresno County, evacuation warnings still in place
Forward progress has been stopped on a wildfire burning in the Tollhouse area of Fresno County.The Watts Fire broke out just after 4 p.m. Saturday on Watts Valley Road. CAL FIRE says it has burned at least 90 acres, destroyed two structures and is 55 percent contained.Four crews with more than 60 people from the Fresno and Kings County Cal Fire Unit are battling the flames. Large fire contained at pallet yard in Fresno County
Investigators are working to figure out what started a fire at a pallet yard in Fresno County that spread to several nearby structures, including a home.It happened just before midnight Friday in the area of Brawley and Franklin avenues.More than 50 firefighters from North Central Fire, Fresno Fire, Fresno County Fire and Madera County Fire helped battle the blaze.The fire also destroyed and damaged several tractor-trailers at a nearby trucking company.The Red Cross is helping at least five residents who were displaced by the blaze.No one was hurt.
Non-profit gifts skateboards to Boys & Girls Clubs of Fresno County
A local non-profit is taking action to spread a love of skateboarding by providing kids with free boards and equipment.It's all possible through a partnership between the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fresno County and Fresno Skateboard Salvage.The donation at the West Fresno Club included more than 50 skateboards, helmets and shoes.The kids got safety lessons before hopping on their boards.The founder of Fresno Skateboard Salvage says skateboarding helped keep him out of trouble when he was younger.That inspired him to start building boards for kids, who might struggle to afford them.

There are hundreds of thousands of kids across California who qualify for free money for college and haven't claimed it.The California Kids Investment and Development Savings Program (CalKIDS) is waiting for those kids to take advantage of its program."The concept is how can the state make college more attainable for more families across the state," Manager of Children's Savings Account Initiatives Noah Lightman said.It was first launched in the summer of 2022.It gives all children born July 1, 2022, or later up to $175.Low-income students born prior to that date can qualify for up to $1,500.Lightman said the goal is...
