WASATCH COUNTY, Utah ( ABC4 ) — Officials with the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the shooting and killing of a dog within the county that was first reported over the weekend.

On Saturday, Aug. 10, deputies were dispatched to a home in Midway, Utah, at around 9 a.m. According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, the initial call reported that a dog had been shot and killed.

Preliminary investigations revealed there was probable cause for officials to believe that the suspect committed aggravated cruelty to an animal and unlawfully discharged a firearm within city limits.

“This incident is being taken very seriously,” Sheriff Jared Rigby said. “The safety of our community, including its animals, is the top priority for our office. We are thoroughly investigating this incident to ensure all appropriate actions are taken.”

The sheriff’s office said the case has been referred to the Wasatch County Attorney’s Office for screening related to criminal charges. The sheriff’s office did not release more information about the suspect or the dog.

Citing the ongoing investigation, officials said they are not releasing more information at this time.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
