    WEATHER ALERT: Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued throughout Utah

    Update, 12:58 p.m.:

    SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for the majority of Utah until 7 p.m. today, Aug. 17.

    Hail up to ping-pong size is possible. Wind gusts up to 70 mph are likely. Frequent lightning can be expected.

    Update, 12:52 p.m.:

    SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect in northwestern Wasatch County, east-central Salt Lake County, southwestern Summit County, and north-central Utah County.

    The northern Utah thunderstorm warning is in effect until 1:30 p.m.

    Just before 12:50 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located near Orem, or 7 miles north of Provo, moving northeast at 30 mph.

    Wind gusts of 60 mph and penny-sized hail can be expected.

    Exact affected locations include Provo, Park City, Heber City, Orem, Pleasant Grove, Heber, Lindon, Daniel, Wasatch Mountain State Park, Timber Lakes, Little Cottonwood Canyon, Big Cottonwood Canyon, Midway, Charleston, Alta, Wallsburg, Brighton, Deer Creek State Park, Mt Timpanogos, and Sundance.

    This includes US Route 40 between mile markers 9 and 24.

    SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect in Tooele County until 1 p.m. today, Aug. 17.

    Just before 12:30 p.m., severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 14 miles south of the Utah Test and Training Range South to 6 miles north of Dugway Proving Ground Test Range to 17 miles southwest of Dugway English Village.

    The storm is moving east at 50 mph. The thunderstorm damage threat has been upgraded to “Considerable.”

    Wind gusts around 70 mph and hail around .75 inches can be expected.

    Exact locations include Dugway English Village, Dugway Proving Ground Test Range, Utah Test and Training Range South, Delle, Knolls, Clive, Skull Valley, Utah Test and Training Range North, and Bonneville Salt Flats.

    This includes I-80 between mile markers 14 and 78.

    “Expect considerable tree damage. Damage is likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings,” the warning from NWS states. “For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.”
