Wirth Watching: Back in 1979, Craig Wirth decided to try to be an expert ski jumper

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Craig Wirth has spent more than five decades at ABC4. Next month, he begins year 55.

Of course, not all of the years were consecutive, as he did spend time in Los Angeles, New York, and on the networks. Tonight, though, we are looking back on a young Craig from decades ago.

As we wrap up our summer, we are showcasing some of Craig’s stories from the years gone by. While Craig normally tells others’ stories, this is our chance to show one of Craig’s.

Back in 1979 — Wirth tried his hand at waterskiing, which includes a fast-moving boat, deep water, and more.

He started with the ski slalom, the object of the ski slalom is to slalom around a set of buoys placed in the water.

“Made the first… how about that,” he said.

He nearly missed on the second buoy.

“Oh el stinko on the third,” he said. However, that wasn’t all she wrote for this feature. There were still more things to try out!

Craig also tried his hand at water ski jumping during this “Wirth Watching” adventure. Water ski jumping includes a moving boat, a slippery ramp, and that same, deep water.

Craig may or may not have done the splits at 30 miles per hour and went head first into the water while doing the jumping portion, you’ll have to watch for yourself and find out the rest.
