Thunderstorms scattered across Utah Friday, set to be dry and cool over weekend

SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) – Happy Friday, Utah! Scattered thunderstorms are coming Friday afternoon east of the I-15, with strong winds ahead of an incoming cold front. However, the wet weather won’t stay for the entire weekend.

After a quiet and calm start, the daytime heating is mixing with some monsoon moisture to kick off a few scattered showers and storms across the Beehive state.

Red Flag Warning issued across western Utah amid critical wildfire conditions

The strongest storms will be seen in eastern Utah east of I-15, which could bring some isolated damaging wind gusts and hail. The Wasatch Front may not have the same potential for severe storms, but thunderstorms will still bubble up before moving northeast over the Wasatch Mountains.

Southern Utah will still see storms today, but not to the same extent as yesterday. The flash flood risk in our outdoor recreation areas is starting to decrease, but all the national and state parks are still in the “Possible” category for flash flood potential.

Strong winds are expected today ahead of an incoming cold front. A Wind Advisory is in place for Western Juab/Millard Counties, the Great Salt Lake Desert, Tooele/Rush Valleys, and Southwest Utah through 10 p.m. Saturday. Southern winds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are possible.

Strong winds will also amplify the fire risk. A Red Flag Warning is in effect through midnight Saturday night for most of western Utah, generally west of I-15. Humidity will drop as low as 5-9% with little overnight recovery, only rising to about 20%.

Wet weather starts to taper off by Saturday, but lingering moisture in the east could spell more thunderstorms early across far eastern Utah, then Saturday evening across far northwestern Utah with a passing cold front.

T he wind stays strong into Saturday as the cold front pushes closer and temperatures will plummet over the weekend giving us an Autumn appetizer. Tomorrow’s highs will be in the low to mid 80s for most, and low 90s for the hottest spots.

By Sunday, temperatures cool with some areas beneath the mid-70s, and hot spots in the low 90s and upper 80s.
