    Hiker dies in Grand Canyon National Park while hiking Thunder River Trail

    GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (ABC4) — A hiker has died while in the area of the Thunder River Trail in Grand Canyon National Park.

    According to the National Parks Service (NPS) on Aug. 27, workers received a report of a solo backpacker who had failed to check in with a family member while attempting the Thunder River Trail to Deer Creek Trail.

    The hiker was only described as a 60-year-old male from North Carolina. A search and rescue team was sent to locate the missing backpacker, according to NPS.

    The following day, Aug. 28, just before 10 a.m., National Park Service (NPS) search and rescue personnel, responding via helicopter, located an unresponsive individual along a route that Lower Tapeats Camp and Deer Creek Camp.

    National Parks Service stated the 60-year-old male from North Carolina, was on a solo multi-day backpacking trip from Thunder River to Deer Creek.

    They also said an investigation into the incident is underway by the NPS in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner.

    The Thunder River-Deer Creek Trail loop goes down along the Colorado River through the Surprise Valley area of Grand Canyon NP.

    No additional information has been made available at this time.
