SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — Utah Highway Patrol officers were taken all over Salt Lake County on Sunday night after a pursuit started on State Street.

Two motorcycle riders were seen by police speeding on State Street near 3600 South. According to the probable cause affidavit of both arrests, the bikers were alleged to be traveling nearly 40 mph over the 40 mph speed limit.

Police radioed for helicopter support on the chase, enabling them to follow the two bikers.

At the 3300 South light, both bikes turned right. The two motorcyclists drove a short way south and turned to go west onto the Meadowbrook Expressway, 3900 South, before turning onto Main Street to head back toward downtown Salt Lake City.

Police say the two motorcycles approached the police car and made a U-Turn. The officer turned on lights and sirens while the police helicopter followed the bikers in the air.

One biker, identified as Tobias Catalano, 20, was surrounded by police and surrendered. The other biker, identified as Kamas Nicholes, 24, fled the scene and continued onto I-15 South.

Nicholes allegedly reached speeds of 120 mph while he fled from police.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Nicholes drove to Catalano’s residence and left the motorcycle in a garage on the property. He then went into the home to hide.

A roommate let police into the home, where Nicholes was the sole person inside at the time police made the entry. Police allegedly found clothes inside the home that matched the police description of Nicholes. Nicholes was located and arrested.

Nicholes is charged with the following:

    • Failure to stop or respond at command of police
    • Reckless driving
    • Speed contest or exhibition on highway
    • Failure to display license plate

Catalano was charged with the following:

    • Failure to stop or respond at command of police
    • Speeding
    • Failed to register or expired registration
    • Failure to display license plate

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
