LEHI, Utah ( ABC4 ) — The young boy who accidentally shot himself in the parking lot of a Maverik gas station near Thanksgiving Point has died, the Lehi City Police Department confirmed early Tuesday morning.

The 8-year-old child, who has not been identified, was rushed to the hospital on Monday evening, Sept. 2, after suffering a gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators said the shooting appeared to be “unintentional and self-inflicted.”

Life-saving measures were taken by first-responding officers as well as bystanders before the boy was taken to a local Lehi hospital in “extreme critical condition.” The boy was later flown to a separate hospital where he died the next morning due to his wound.

An investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post as new information becomes available.
