ST. GEORGE, Utah ( ABC4 ) — The St. George woman who was found dead in her home on Sunday reportedly feared for her life and “wanted to escape” her living situation, according to St. George Police.

The new information comes from journal entries found at the scene that were kept by the woman, who has been identified as Niki A. Sampson, 47. According to court documents, Sampson wrote about how her husband, Eric L. Sampson, 50, would become angry and aggressive after he had been drinking.

Investigators said Niki was found with several old and new bruises on both of her arms as well as “significant bruising” on her face near her mouth.

According to court documents, Eric Sampson has previously been taken into custody for domestic violence assault against Niki, as well as intoxication in July. Court records show Eric was released from custody shortly after on the condition he appear in-person for his hearing.

Eric Sampson was arrested on suspicion of his wife’s murder late Sunday evening after police were called to the home on reports of a cardiac arrest. He was found performing chest compressions on Niki when police arrived at the home.

After his arrest, Eric allegedly spoke about the previous altercations but denied causing the bruises found on her body. Investigators also claim Eric had “multiple versions” about what happened between him and his wife and he had admitted to having several alcoholic drinks throughout the day.

Eric Sampson has been ordered to be held without bail, pending a pretrial hearing.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

A lot of people are stuck or trapped in bad situations because it is so hard to afford housing. Especially for someone who is financially abused. It feels like you're trapped, your kids are trapped. Things are just outrageously expensive. And that's causing women men and children to find death is the only way out. I pray for our society and our government that thinks hunters crack is more important than domestic abuse.
