SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — A Utah man is facing charges — including attempted murder — after he allegedly strangled his roommate and threatened him, according to court documents.

Ryan Cory Elkington, 39, is facing one count of attempted murder, a first-degree felony; and one count of retaliation against a witness, victim, or informant, a third-degree felony. Both of the charges are considered domestic violence, according to documents.

On Aug. 29, Elkington and another person reportedly attacked Elkington’s roommate in the victim’s bedroom, according to documents.

The previous night, the victim called police for an unrelated incident involving Elkington, documents said. The other individual reportedly entered the victim’s room while he was sleeping and began yelling and throwing things at him.

While the pair argued about the incident from the previous day, Elkington got involved in the situation. When the victim attempted to close the door, Elkington “aggressively pushed the door open and started a physical altercation,” documents said.

The victim had a security camera in his room, and officers reviewed the footage, which captured the roommate and the other person entering the room and threatening the victim, according to documents.

Documents said Elkington admitted to strangling his roommate and said he would have “killed the guy.” The victim reported being unable to breathe and losing consciousness during the incident.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
