SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — An arrest has been made nearly a month after two people were found with gunshot wounds near State Street in downtown Salt Lake City, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Jowil Charles, 31, was safely taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 3. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on 10 counts of first-degree felony discharge of a firearm and one misdemeanor charge for possession of a controlled substance.

Police say Charles was involved in the Aug. 10 shooting near State Street and Exchange Place where two people were hospitalized.

Officers were originally responding to an unrelated call about a reported fight when they heard gunshots nearby. The officers quickly went to investigate the gunshots and encountered several people running toward them.

During their investigation, officers found a 30-year-old man in a parking lot and a 24-year-old woman in a nearby business, both with gunshot wounds. According to court documents the 30-year-old man suffered nine gunshot wounds and was hospitalized in critical condition. The woman was caught in the crossfire and suffered a gunshot wound to her calf.

Police said the man is still hospitalized in critical condition as of Tuesday, Sept. 3. Neither victim has been publicly identified.

“Charles showed no concern for the safety of others when he fired multiple rounds at the 30-year-old man and into a crowd of people,” court documents state.

Charles has been ordered to be held in the Salt Lake County Metro Jail without bail, pending a pretrial hearing.

An investigation into the shooting is still ongoing and further details have not been released. Anyone with information on the case, including those who may have photos or video of the incident, is asked to call the Salt Lake City Police Department at 801-799-3000 and reference case number 24-182377.
