TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC4) — A Taylorsville man is now facing charges from a federal grand jury after he reportedly shot his friend over who would drive a friend’s car.

Maxwell Archibald, 21, of Taylorsville was indicted on carjacking and firearm charges, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Salt Lake City stated in a press release on Sept. 4.

Archibald was charged by the U.S. Attorney’s Office on charges of carjacking, as well as using, carrying, brandishing, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence on Aug. 29. Police say that he allegedly shot at a friend multiple times, wounding that person in the arm.

Charging documents stated Archibald was with two friends at a gas station near 7300 South and Union Park Ave. in Midvale when the argument started.

Charging documents say the victim of the shooting told Unified Police Archibald wanted to drive his friend’s car. Archibald became more upset, which led to a physical altercation and the alleged shooting.

After Archibald reportedly shot the victim, Archibald got in the car and drove off. A short police chase ensued, which ended in a crash and subsequent foot chase.

Archibald was arrested and charging documents stated that police found a gun that matched the one used in the shooting. Archibald is due in federal court Sept. 5 at 1:30 p.m.

The case is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
