    Cedar City man accused of felony theft after stealing car, crashing

    CEDAR CITY, Utah (ABC4) — Cedar City Police say a man who allegedly stole a car was involved in a multi-vehicle crash Sunday night while possibly under the influence.

    According to an affidavit of probable cause issued by Cedar City Police , the vehicle Robert Wayland Douglas, 25, of Cedar City was reportedly driving under the influence. Police also say he was speeding when he crashed into a parked car.

    Douglas almost collided with another car, which was full of people, before coming to a stop. According to police, he collided with the parked car at nearly 80 mph.

    Police reportedly found that the vehicle Douglas drove was not registered to him. The owner of the car told police that the car was unlawfully taken, and Douglas allegedly admitted to stealing the car.

    Douglas was arrested for the following charges:

    • Theft of a firearm or operable motor vehicle, a second-degree felony.
    • Theft – value $500 to $1499, a class A misdemeanor.
    • Driving under the influence – first offense in 10 years, a class B misdemeanor.
    • Driving on a denied license, a class C misdemeanor.
    • Reckless driving, a class B misdemeanor.
    • Possession of a controlled substance, a class B misdemeanor.
    • Speeding.

    Police said Douglas allegedly admitted to speeding along Northfield Rd. in Cedar City. He also allegedly admitted to using marijuana just hours before the crash, which led to the DUI and drug possession charges.

    Douglas was arrested on the aforementioned charges and booked into Iron County Jail where he is still being held.

    Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
