SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A Salt Lake County grand jury has indicted a Holladay man who reportedly assaulted a pregnant woman and fled the scene.

According to the Salt Lake District Attorney’s Office, Katima Tukka, 22, allegedly assaulted a pregnant woman, choked her until she passed out, and fled the scene.

Tukka was indicted on the following charges:

    • Assault of a pregnant woman.
    • Aggravated assault resulting in loss of consciousness.
    • Failure to stop at the command of a law officer.
    • Damage or interruption of a communication device.
    • Interfering with a peace officer.

Three of the five charges had domestic violence enhancements, according to documents.

The woman told Salt Lake City Police that Tukka allegedly entered her residence intoxicated, so she asked Tukka to leave, which upset him. Tukka then reportedly strangled the woman and swore at her. She was unable to breathe and she eventually passed out, the woman told police.

The victim was taken to a hospital. SLCPD found Tukka searching the area but he reportedly fled after being commanded to stop.

According to documents, Salt Lake City Police responded to a domestic disturbance on Sept. 3. Police say they made contact with the victim and saw she was bleeding from her face. The victim said she had known Tukka for about five months when this incident occurred.

Documents said Tukka was aware the victim was pregnant when they first got to know each other.

He was eventually arrested by SLCPD, but Tukka has since posted bail and is awaiting a trial date.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

How do these people that do violent assaults get bounced? People that have jaywalking tickets. People that have driving tickets. People that have shoplifting tickets. Don't get a bond. How does somebody? That's almost kills a person. Get a bond and get out. Oh yeah. I'm sure it's not a white man.
