EPHRAIM, Utah (ABC4) — More than 200 students from the Ephraim-based Snow College showed up on Sept. 7 to help the town of Fountain Green in a big way after floods damaged roughly half the town’s homes three weeks ago.

A press release from the school said this was part of the college’s day of service. Construction technology professor David Barker organized the event, hoping to get 40-50 students. To his surprise, he got over 200.

What does a state of emergency mean for Utah flooding victims, and how are residents are dealing with it?

“As word about the event spread, more and more groups got involved, students from across campus were excited for the chance to serve the community,” the release said.

Students were split into two groups: One removed the sandbags while the other installed sheetrock in homes that were damaged during the flooding.

“It was a whirlwind of a day, but the residents of Fountain Green were so appreciative. Our students were in good spirits and smiling the whole time as they worked hard throughout the day,” Professor Barker said in the release. The professor noted that he was impressed by all the students who came to help.

Students working on drywall installed 350 sheets of drywall in homes damaged by flooding. Students removing sandbags helped Mayor Mark Coombs move the bags, the release said.
