DAVIS COUNTY, Utah ( ABC4 ) — Four days after the Rudd Creek Fire initially sparked , Utah Fire Info said crews are making “impressive progress” fighting the blaze.

According to officials with the U.S. Forest Service, the Rudd Creek Fire was estimated at a size of about 24 acres as of Sept. 14 and was 25% contained. The blaze was sparked by lightning on Sept. 10 .

For the safety of both the public and the firefighters, some closures in the area are still in effect. Specifically, the Rudd Canyon Trail, Farmington Ponds area, and a portion of Fireline Road below Rudd Creek are closed.

“Crews are making impressive progress on the Rudd Creek Fire, having secured a large portion of the fire perimeter,” Utah Fire Info said in a Sept. 14 update on social media .

Officials said the fire is burning at an elevation of about 6,000 feet just east of Farmington, but firefighting crews are facing challenges because of the steep terrain.

“With the assistance of water drops from two helicopters, they’ve effectively cooled hot spots to prevent flare-ups along the fire’s edge,” Utah Fire Info explained.

The National Weather Service expects elevated winds through Sunday, after which a southwest flow is expected. Utah Fire Info said firefighters hope the rain — which is expected early next week — will help fight the fire.

About 80 fire personnel have been assigned to fight the Rudd Creek Fire, and crews were expected to continue their efforts to secure the fire’s edge on Saturday.

Utah Fire Info expressed its gratitude to Farmington City and Davis County.
