Quiet start to the week in Utah with colder weather, severe storms in store

SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) – Happy Monday, Utah! It’s a relatively quiet start to the day statewide with changes moving in throughout the afternoon and evening.
Bottom Line?! A strong cold front is moving in tonight bringing gusty winds and a chance for some severe storms over the state.
This afternoon, a low-pressure system is moving into the Great Basin, bringing stronger southerly winds. Expect wind gusts of 40-50 mph in parts of western Utah. A Wind Advisory is already in place for these conditions, it runs from noon today through 9 p.m. Travel may be impacted for those driving high-profile vehicles, and blowing dust may reduce visibility as well.
Aside from the wind, northern and eastern Utah are expecting showers and thunderstorms, some of which may be severe. The best chance of storms will be in the afternoon and evening. In southwest Utah, a dry zone will limit storm coverage, though there will still be enough instability for a stray shower or thunderstorm.
By late Monday night into Tuesday, the system will start moving across northern Utah, leading to more widespread showers. Tuesday will see cooler temperatures and continued showers, especially in the northern regions, with the greatest chances north of I-80. Temperatures will drop 10-15 degrees below average for this time of year. Daytime highs will tumble into the mid to upper 60s for northern Utah, and southern Utah will see highs in the 70s and low 80s as well with highs near 80 degrees for St. George through Friday.
A second low will develop along the Pacific Coast by Wednesday and track eastward into Utah by Thursday or Friday, bringing additional showers and storms, especially in northern and western areas. Overall, temperatures will stay cooler than usual, but rainfall will be limited. A third system might arrive later next weekend, but there’s still uncertainty around how it will develop. What’s clear is that cooler-than-normal conditions will continue into early next week.
