WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah ( ABC4 ) — A West Valley City man was formally charged with attempted murder charges after he allegedly stabbed a woman multiple times in the face, neck, chest, and arm, leaving her in critical condition. Following the incident, police said the man might have fled the state.
Juan Daniel Melendez-Borunda, 27, was indicted in the Third District Court on one count of attempted murder and three counts of unlawful distribution of an intimate image. All charges carry domestic violence enhancements.
Charging documents state that Melendez-Borunda had gotten into an argument with a woman, after which the two separated. While the woman was asleep at her residence, Melendez-Borunda called her and asked her to meet him outside.
Large booms felt and heard throughout Salt Lake Valley – Here’s what we know The woman stated to police that she felt uneasy about going out to speak to Melendez-Borunda, but went to talk with him anyway. Melendez-Borunda asked the woman to follow him around the block to one of their cars, to which she agreed.
Once in the car, Melendez-Borunda allegedly locked the doors and attempted to kill the woman by stabbing her repeatedly. The woman honked the horn to try to get the attention of neighbors. The victim claimed Melendez-Borunda then calmed down for a moment, and she escaped from the car and ran to neighbors’ homes for help.
Melendez-Borunda then got out of the car and fled the scene, the affidavit states.
The woman was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, with multiple stab wounds requiring stitches and staples to stop the bleeding.
Following up in the investigation, police conducted a cellphone ping on Melendez-Borunda and found that he might have left the state, as he has ties to family in different states and out of the country.
Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
