HERRIMAN, Utah (ABC4) — A man was arrested early Monday morning after a report of shots fired at a car in Riverton in an incident police believe is gang-related.

Alejandro Palmar Romero, 19, faces five charges, all of which are felonies after he reportedly shot and injured someone in Riverton. Romero faces three charges of felony discharge of a firearm causing bodily injury, one charge of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, and one charge of possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person.

Police responded just before midnight on Sunday. According to arrest documents, police found a black passenger vehicle that had crashed into the fence by the pool. Several shell casings were found near the car. Shortly after police arrived, a man and a woman came to the scene and told police that they were in the vehicle that had crashed.

The occupants of the vehicle found in Herriman reportedly claimed people in a white car had shot at them. Police asked if anyone had been in the car with them, and the occupants stated that Romero was in the car with them. Other witnesses told police they saw a man fleeing the scene on foot wearing a red shirt and white shorts.

Arrest documents state that police found another vehicle that was reportedly involved in Riverton. Police located that vehicle and found multiple bullet holes in the car. Police then interviewed the occupants of the car in Riverton.

Police found the man had an injured shoulder, which is believed to be from shrapnel from the shots fired into the car. Both occupants of the car in Riverton named Romero as the person who had shot at them.

When police questioned Romero, conflicting statements were given by Romero and the occupants of the car. Police arrested Romero based on statements from the victims in Riverton. He was booked in Salt Lake County Jail on the aforementioned charges.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
