NORTH OGDEN, Utah ( ABC4 ) — A base-jumper from Alabama tragically died after base-jumping in a wingsuit in the area of Willard Peak in Weber County on Friday, Sept. 27.

Jonathan Bizilia, 27, had reportedly gone to the peak around 2 p.m. with a friend. A short time later, the friend called emergency services when Bizilia did not check in after his jump. The friend was able to provide crucial information, such as jump locations and flight routes.

The Weber County Sheriff’s Office , in partnership with the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Public Safety , launched a search and rescue effort to find Bizilia that lasted approximately two hours.

The search lasted about two hours before a Department of Public Safety helicopter found Bizilia about one mile northwest of Willard Peak in “extremely rugged” terrain. Authorities said Bizilia had unfortunately crashed during his descent and died on the scene.

Bizilia’s body was recovered by the Department of Public Safety helicopter through a hoist.

“We offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this challenging time,” the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

No further details were immediately provided.
