HEBER, Utah ( ABC4 ) — The “Yellow Lake Fire” — which broke out in the Heber-Kamas Ranger District over the weekend — has burned more than 2,000 acres and is still 0% contained, according to the U.S. Forest Service .

Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest posted a Monday afternoon update on social media , saying the Yellow Lake Fire was estimated at a size of 2,300 acres as of Sept. 30. Initial size estimations said the fire quickly grew from an estimated 150 acres to about 1,500 acres on Sunday.

Officials said the area received some light rain overnight, but the fire continued to burn in “heavy timber” and “standing dead and down trees.”

Nearby areas have been closed for the safety of the public and the firefighters.

“The closed area boundaries are Mill Hollow on the west side, Soapstone Basin area south of Highway 150, Iron Mine Mountain to the east and the West Fork of the Duchesne River on the south,” the Forest Service said Monday.

Highway 35 was still closed to traffic as of Monday afternoon, and officials said it would likely remain closed for at least 48 hours. The road is expected to reopen after fire activity decreases and debris is cleared from the road.

Officials said 80 personnel have been assigned to the fire, with additional resources expected to arrive at the fire Monday night.

“The Forest Service is taking all available actions to fully suppress the fire, using firefighting resources where safe and effective,” officials said on Monday.

Officials have asked residents to not report any smoke they see in the area, as it was expected to be visible throughout the day.
