SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — ABC4 Chief Meteorologist Alana Brophy is taking a break from forecasting for a bit — but don’t worry, she’ll be back soon. Alana is heading out on maternity leave as she and her family get ready for her second baby.

“The most important job I have is as a mother, but I feel so happy that my passion and love as Chief Meteorologist is something I can balance,” Alana said. “ABC4 has shown me a tremendous amount of love and support and I take pride in knowing I’m setting an example for my children, working hard inside and outside the home.”

Yes, there really is a sphinx in Utah with the face of the first LDS leader

Alana said ABC4 viewers have been “nothing but kind” since she first started at the station, and she feels as if they have watched her grow up, get married, and have her first child.

“I have felt the same amount of love and support throughout this pregnancy,” she said.

Alana said she has been getting asked by viewers when she’ll be back — and whether the new baby is a boy or a girl.

“To both of those questions, I say, ‘You’ll be surprised,'” Alana said. “I want viewers to know that I will be back, and I look forward to sharing with them in just a little while.”

She continued: “We are just so excited to grow our family in what we consider the most beautiful state in the country.”

What will be happening in the meantime?

“I’ll be back forecasting Utah weather in no time,” Alana said. “You can expect to see me live in the elements and on the green screen toward the end of the year.”

As Chief Meteorologist, Alana gives Utahns the latest weather updates during the week. But familiar faces will take over while she’s on leave.

“Viewers don’t have to worry while I step away because we have some great forecasters holding down the fort while I’m gone,” Alana said.

While Alana’s out, meteorologist Cedric Haynes will be covering the 4Warn Forecast on weeknights during the 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. newscasts.

“He’s newer to Utah and viewers can expect his high energy and enthusiasm to take them through the fall months in Utah,” Alana said. “He’s happy to be in Utah, and I know viewers will really appreciate his forecasting.”

Cedric first started at ABC4 earlier this year, and usually does the morning forecast. While he’s on nights for Alana, viewers can expect to see meteorologist Nate Larsen in the mornings.

“In the mornings you get to see our very own Nate Larsen, a Utah native, who can handle any shift seamlessly,” Alana said.

As for the weekends, Alana said that viewers will be able to watch forecaster Seth Sanders. She said, “He’s a University of Utah graduate whose passion for weather shines through.”

As for the 7 p.m. shows and southern Utah residents, Alana said viewers won’t have to worry — “Cannon Secrist will stay on the job and bring them all the weather updates from the south,” Alana said.

“I look forward to coming back, forecasting our beautiful four seasons in Utah, and serving as a role model for my children and young women,” Alana said.

She continued: “I’m beyond excited for my family to grow, and feel very lucky to be at ABC4 to do so.”
