SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — With the 2024 general election just weeks away, races both statewide and across the country are entering the home stretch.

So, how has Utah’s voter turnout been over the past few years?

Voter turnout has been historically high over the past six elections, with approximately 50% of registered voters casting ballots. The 2020 presidential election measured the highest the state has seen since the year 2000, according to Utah’s Voting Info website .

In 2020, 69.17% of the 2.2 million eligible voters in Utah cast a vote. Utah had 1.68 million registered voters , with nearly 1.51 million of those registered people casting votes. That means roughly 90% of people who were registered voters actually cast their ballot.

Both the voting turnout and the registered voter rates are the highest the state has seen since the year 2000, the site said.

According to Our World in Data , Utah’s numbers have bested the national average in the last three presidential elections.

From 2000 until 2020, the state saw an increase of more than a half-million registered voters — to nearly 1.7 million voters, according to Utah’s Voting Info website . The number of ballots cast by registered voters also saw a steady climb over the same period, virtually doubling over the 20 year period.

Along with that, the eligible voting population also climbed a substantial amount. Eligible voters in the state climbed to almost 2.2 million people over that same period, increasing by more than 750,000 voters.

Roughly three out of every four people who were eligible to do so voted in the 2020 election. That follows a trend that’s also seen county by county in Utah, according to the site .

Wayne County had the highest percentage of ballots relative to the registered voter population, with 93% of registered voters going out to the polls . Along the Wasatch Front, Utah County has seen an 89% turnout out of registered voters, Salt Lake County has a 90% turnout, and Davis has seen a 90.5% turnout.
