ST. GEORGE, Utah (ABC4) — When the Black Desert Championship tees off next week in St George, former Fremont High School and BYU star Patrick Fishburn will be among the golfers playing in the event.

His rookie season on the PGA tour did not start well this year, he missed the cut in every event for the first two months. Since then, Fishburn has turned it around, remaining in position to keep his tour card for next season.

“It’s never fun to miss seven, or eight cuts, whatever I did. But unfortunately, I do have a history of missing a lot of cuts. And so but, you know, eventually I figured out some things had a little break and, you know, we’re back on track,” Fishburn told ABC4.com.

During that break, he changed his driver and switched his putting grip which made a huge difference. He started making cuts and his mental outlook improved. Highlighting for Fishburn the up and down nature of golf.

“Golf’s a weird game. When you’re when you’re playing well, you don’t think you’ll ever play bad, and when you’re playing bad, I wasn’t sure I was ever going to break par again. So it’s it’s a weird cycle,” he said.

One of the best days for Fishburn came in New Orleans, where he paired with his former high school and college teammate Zac Blair to finish in a tie for fourth at the Zurich Classic. Fishburn said playing with Blair was huge for him.

“Playing with Zac was a huge turning point of the year. He’s one of my best friends. And the way that his attitude on the golf course is great for me. He’s so loose and relaxed and we had so much fun that week,” Fishburn said.

Fishburn led the PGA Tour by averaging 66 on his Saturday rounds. This has put him in a position to keep his PGA Tour card. He is looking forward to next week’s event, The Black Desert Championship in St George.

“It’s an amazing facility and it’s a great golf course. It’s a great championship test. You know, the course has only been open for a year and the tour decided to go there after a year of being open. So it’s, you know, it’s obviously worthy of a PGA tournament,” Fishburn said. “I know the guys are going to love it. It’s going to be an awesome week.”
