SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — An 18-year-old man was arrested for illegal street racing in Salt Lake City on Friday, according to Salt Lake City Police .

At around 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 4, police responded to the area of 400 South 5200 West on reports of a large group street racers. The drivers were reportedly blocking off parking lot entrances.

Arriving on scene, officers found two cars speeding towards them side-by-side, according to a press release from Salt Lake City Police. The two cars had been stopped but took off speeding at the exact same time, police said.

The two cars reportedly raced passed officers, including a Utah Highway Patrol trooper. Both the officers and trooper conducted traffic stops and arrested two people.

Details on the other individual have not been made available, but police arrested one driver, 18, and booked him into Salt Lake County Jail on charges of illegal street racing. Officers impounded the man’s car as part of their investigation.

“Illegal street racing is incredibly dangerous, not just for those racing, but for everyone around,” said SLCPD Chief Mike Brown. “The risks of illegal street racing are simply too much. One wrong decision or move, or a mechanical failure, can lead to deadly outcomes. Those who participate in illegal street racing could face legal consequences, like losing your driver’s license, significant fines, and jail time.”
