MAPLETON, Utah ( ABC4 ) — A crossing guard who was holding a stop sign in a marked crosswalk was injured after a driver drove through the intersection and reportedly hit the guard with their mirror on the morning of Monday, Oct. 7.

The crossing guard was taken to a local hospital, where officials determined she suffered a broken elbow and will need surgery on her ankle, according to a press release from the Mapleton Utah Police Department .

Which ‘abandoned buildings’ did these 19 Spirit Halloween stores take over in Utah?

Police said the driver — who was reportedly traveling east on Maple Street — did not see the crossing guard in the crosswalk, which is located at 120 W Maple Street in front of Mapleton Elementary.

“The crossing guard was in a marked crosswalk with her stop sign elevated above her head,” police said in the release. “The driver’s vision was obscured by direct sun and a dirty windshield.”

Police said the driver’s right-side mirror hit the crossing guard as the driver passed through the intersection, which caused the crossing guard to fall down. The Mapleton City Fire Department transported the crossing guard to a local hospital after she was evaluated at the scene.

The driver is being cooperative with investigators and has received a citation for failing to yield to a crossing guard, according to police.

Neither the driver nor the crossing guard were initially identified by officials.

There is no further information at this time.
