PERSHING COUNTY, Nevada ( ABC4 ) — A Utahn was killed in a crash with a semi-truck on I-80 in Nevada on Wednesday, according to the Nevada Dept. of Public Safety.

The deceased is identified as Lawerence Neely, 65, of East Carbon, Utah.

At around 5:20 p.m. on Oct. 9, Nevada Highway Patrol troopers responded to a crash on I-80 at mile marker 155 in Pershing County, Nevada — located about 20 miles west of Winnemucca.

The initial investigation showed that Neely was heading eastbound on the highway in a white Toyota Corolla. They were reportedly in the far-right lane of travel.

At the same time, a semi-truck was also heading eastbound in the far right lane at a slow rate of speed due to a wildland fire that had closed I-80 closer to Winnemucca. Neely struck the semi-truck from behind, causing their car to become lodged underneath the semi.

Neely was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Nevada Dept. of Public Safety. There were no other occupants in the car.

The driver of the semi was uninjured in the crash.

“The crash is considered an open investigation and is being investigated by the Nevada Highway
Patrol Traffic Homicide Unit. If you were a witness to this incident, or have any information
regarding the crash, please contact the NHP Elko Office at (775) 753-1111 or e-mail ncemirt@dps.state.nv.us,” the release from Nevada DPS states.

No further information is available at this time.
