SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — Happy Monday, Utah! It’s a fairly calm weather day across the state as mostly quiet skies are expected for the western half with a slight chance of showers along the Utah Mountain Spine and east.

The moisture is associated with a weak trough moving into the state and is expected to mainly impact southeast Utah where a few isolated thunderstorms are expected to pop up, generating gusty winds up to 40 to 50 mph.

Warm temperatures for the first half of the week, then colossal drop in temperatures and valley rain, mountain snow

By Tuesday, the trough overhead is set to slide down into Arizona, weakening even more. The chance for showers drops off, leaving just a slight possibility of an afternoon sprinkle over the high terrain near the Arizona border.

Other than that, it’ll stay pretty warm with temperatures still about 10 to 20 degrees above what’s typical for this time of year. But don’t get too comfy with the warmth; things are about to change big time by Thursday.

Before the cooldown hits, Wednesday will still be unseasonably warm, staying about 10 to 15 degrees above normal, and southwesterly winds will pick up. It might even be our last 80-degree day this year!

The dry air and gusty winds, combined with dry vegetation, could make for some risky fire conditions across western Utah.

By Thursday, expect a cooldown as a cold front will have swept through with temperatures dropping 5 degrees in southern Utah and up to 20 degrees in northern Utah. The first wave of cooler air could bring some rain to northern Utah, though snow will likely stay above 9,000 feet.

Things get interesting Friday morning as the main storm system arrives, pushing widespread rain and snow across Utah. Cold air will drop snow levels down to around 5,000-6,000 feet, bringing a dusting to mountain valleys and high benches.

The depth of the cold air could vary, though, meaning snow levels could go as low as valley floors or stay higher up depending on the intensity of the storm system. The storm is expected to stall to the south of the state and could possibly move north into Utah again over the weekend.

Either way, big changes are brewing and it’s best to stay 4Warned with the latest updates on air and online, we are Good4Utah.
