SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — A 17-year-old suspect has been taken into custody after he allegedly shot his 19-year-old roommate in the Glendale neighborhood of Salt Lake City on Thursday night.

Due to the age of the suspect, his identity has not been publicly released.

The Salt Lake City Police Department said the shooting took place near 700 West and North Temple just before midnight on Oct. 17. Upon arrival, police found the 19-year-old with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The 17-year-old was found nearby and safely taken into custody after a short foot chase, according to the Salt Lake Police Department. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of aggravated assault, felony discharge of a firearm resulting in serious bodily injury, minor with possession of a firearm, and failing to stop at the command of the police.

Based on a preliminary investigation, police believe the two had been in a fight over a watch, which violently escalated into the shooting.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
