MORRISTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Parents in the Morristown Central School District received a letter regarding a recent cybersecurity incident.

In a letter to parents, the district was notified on January 19, by Raptor Technologies, a third-party vendor used by the District, that a security vulnerability involving their cloud-based data storage system may have resulted in the District’s data being temporarily accessible.

An investigation was promptly commenced by District technology staff, in cooperation with Raptor. The investigation determined that District documents uploaded to Raptor Technologies’ cloud-based storage system were temporarily accessible to a security researcher who was investigating security vulnerabilities. There is no indication that this data was accessed by any third parties outside the company, aside from the cybersecurity researcher who discovered and reported the security vulnerability. Raptor Technologies confirmed that the security vulnerability was corrected immediately upon discovery, and the data in question was immediately secured and no longer accessible. Based upon Raptor Technologies’ investigation, we do not believe that any student data was downloaded, transmitted, or otherwise misused by third parties.

The data incident was reported to the State Education Department’s Chief Privacy Officer on January 31. This data incident impacted an estimated 316 records. The personally-identifiable information in these records included student first and last name only.

The District is committed to protecting and securing educational data and to safeguarding the privacy of its students. There are many controls in place to protect your child’s educational records. District technology staff will continue to monitor this incident and work with Raptor Technologies to maintain security of its student data.

If anyone has questions regarding this matter, contact the school at (315) 375-8814.
