St. Lawrence University’s Richard F. Brush Art Gallery presents German Modernism: Sound and Vision and Sven Sandberg Paintings from Monday, February 19, through Wednesday, April 10. There will also be a Gallery talk by Brook Henkel and Visiting Artist Sven Sandberg on Monday, February 19, Starting at 4:30 p.m. in the Griffiths Arts Center Room 123. These in-person events are free and open to the public.

The early 20th century saw a radical transformation of visual aesthetics in German art. The portraits, urban scenes and abstract works exhibited in German Modernism: Sound and Vision attest to aesthetic and perceptual changes, as well as to the fragility of human life in the modern technological age.

The paintings of London-based artist Sandberg are “untimely” in the best sense of the word. The colors and brushstrokes recall works of early 20th century European modernism, and the formal compositions of his portraits resemble paintings of eras even further removed.
