GEDDES, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The New York State Fair can be tons of fun for people of all ages, but did you know it is educational too?

The House of Hazards exhibit at the Fair is alerting fairgoers of an important tip that might just save life and prevent you from losing your home to a fire.

The Office of Fire Prevention and Control at the House of Hazards recommends closing your bedroom door at night. They say that by closing a bedroom door at night, you can prevent a fire from spreading.

In the House of Hazards exhibit, they show a door that was taken from a fire. On one side of the door, it is all burnt from the fire, but on the other side, the door is almost completely free of marks.

By showing both sides of this door, fire personnel hope to encourage fairgoers to keep their bedroom doors closed at night.

They say they understand a parent’s reluctance to close a child’s door at night, but they hope when parents see the door, they will encourage this cautious habit in their own homes.

They also recommend families have a working fire alarm on each level of their home and in every bedroom.
