WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Jefferson Community College has appointed Maureen Aiken to a seven-year term on the college’s Board of Trustees.

Aiken’s term started on August 5 and her first board meeting was on Wednesday.

Her teaching career began in 2000 as a second grade teacher at Guardino Elementary School in the Thousand Islands School District. She joined the Watertown City School District in 2001, where she has taught ninth and 10th grade English summer school, fifth grade, and since 2005, has served as a junior high ESOL teacher.

Beyond her classroom responsibilities, Aiken administers the New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners and the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test, liaises with families, and collaborates with classroom teachers to tailor and diversify lesson plans.

Aiken serves as the building representative for the WCSD Crisis Response Committee, delivering essential information and resources to families in crises. Over the course of four years, she has held the office of secretary, then vice president, and then president of the Crescent Yacht Club: Junior Division. In 2014, she founded the nonprofit organization A Book in Every Hand, dedicated to promoting literacy by ensuring that every first-grade student in WCSD received their own book.

She holds an associate degree from Jefferson, a Bachelor’s degree from Le Moyne College, and a Master of Science in Education from SUNY Potsdam.
