    NY State Police investigate Trooper-involved collision in Potsdam

    POTSDAM, N.Y. (WWTI) – According to New York State Police, on Saturday, September 7, at about 10:31 a.m., they responded to a two-car, serious personal injury crash involving a marked State Police patrol vehicle on State Route 11 near the Walmart in the town of Potsdam.

    According to State Police, the preliminary investigation determined that a Trooper was traveling eastbound on State Route 11 with emergency lights and siren activated responding to a call for a physical domestic dispute.

    Active Shooter Drill at Canton-Potsdam Hospital

    State Police stated that as the Trooper approached the intersection near the Walmart, the light at the intersection turned red.  He then struck a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox, which was pulling out of the Walmart onto Route 11. The Trooper immediately rendered emergency medical aid to the occupants of the Equinox.

    According to the police report, the driver of the Chevrolet Equinox was airlifted to the University of Vermont Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The front passenger was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital and later transferred to the University of Vermont Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The two passengers in the rear of the vehicle were transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital with minor injuries.

    The Trooper was also treated for minor injuries at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, according to police.

    The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene. State Police have stated they were assisted by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Potsdam Police Department, Potsdam Fire and Rescue, the West Potsdam Fire Department, Parishville Rescue and the New York State Department of Transportation.

    People need to not blare their music or listen for outside influences like police or fire engines or ambulance sirens to avoid this kind of accidents. My father always said to turn radios off while going through towns or villages or cities for this reason.
