UPDATE: The tractor-trailer was moved on Tuesday night, Sept. 17.

    SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — It’s been more than 24 hours since tractor-trailer trouble began.

“It’s wasting everybody’s time, just to get to one place to the other,” said Ronald Johnson of Syracuse.

It all started around noon on Monday, September 16, after officers were called to the intersection of East Brighton Avenue and East Seneca Turnpike. When officers arrived, they found a tractor-trailer stopped in the middle of the road. Syracuse Police say the oversized load was carrying a windmill turbine when it broke down. SPD had to reduce traffic on Brighton Ave to one lane in both directions.

“This is the route I take and I don’t know any other routes right now. So, I’m a little stuck,” said Nick Russell of Chittenango.

Concerns now growing for Russell after the OCC student had been on his way to class on Tuesday, Sept. 17, until he came across the unpleasant surprise.

“It delays me to get to classes. Right now, I can’t take a test that I need to take because I can’t get to school right now. If I don’t take this test today, it’s going to be a huge problem on my GPA and stuff like that,” said Russell.

But he’s not the only student at OCC that’s being affected by this.

“It usually takes me 11ish minutes to get to school, but today it took me 20-25 minutes and I was almost late,” said Elliot Gosselin of Jamesville.

Drivers say between the construction for the I-81 project and now this, traveling through the busy area has been nothing but a headache.

“They’re doing enough construction as it is. That’s even worse, that’s a worse-off detour. There’s enough detours around here,” said Johnson.

Brighton Ave. has been restricted to one lane but will remain open for traffic.

At around noon on Tuesday, Syracuse Police had to close off E. Seneca Turnpike from Brighton Avenue to Monticello Drive to allow crews to remove the tractor-trailer. It will remain closed until the work is complete. Crews remain optimistic that work will be finished by Tuesday night.

Syracuse Police say the incident itself is still being investigated.

SPD urges drivers to avoid the area if possible.
