Micron construction date slightly delayed by environmental review process

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Onondaga County admits there’s a slight delay in the construction timeline for Micron’s promised megafab campus in the Town of Clay.

At a hearing of the Onondaga County Legislature, the director of the county’s Economic Development Office said construction is scheduled to begin in November of 2025.

Micron’s original timeline called for work to have already begun, starting in the summer of 2024, and then was changed to early 2025.

A spokesperson for Onondaga County cites the slow environmental review process required by New York State and the Federal government basically taking a few months longer than the admittedly-aggressive timeline planned for.

The environmental review process requires a plan for Micron to meet environmental standards as it relocates a species of endangered bats that live in the woods of the White Pine Commerce Park.

The environmental review is slated to result in a draft environmental impact statement being submitted to the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency by the end of 2024, followed by a public comment period.

The county spokesperson assures Central New Yorkers the project is moving forward and cites Micron’s recent decision to move into Downtown Syracuse office space.
