    Jefferson County man charged with alleged hate crime

    MANNSVILLE, N.Y. (WWTI) – A 19-year-old Mannsville man is accused of a hate crime stemming from an incident earlier this week.

    New York State Police allege that Jonas Hobbs harassed another person through Instagram. This included making homophobic slurs and homicidal threats, and also sent a photo of what appeared to be a firearm.

    A search of Hobbs’ residence but did not locate a firearm after executing a search warrant.

    Hobbs was charged with second-degree hate crime/aggravated harassment and communicating a threat by phone/computer, which is a class “E” felony.

    State troopers also filed a Temporary Extreme Risk Protection order under the state’s Red Flag Law with the Jefferson County Supreme Court.

    He was arrested and processed at the state police headquarters in Watertown. Hobbs was transported to Jefferson County CAP Court for Centralized Arraignment and held at Jefferson County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash or $40,000 bond.
