    NNY high school football preview: October 3-5, 2024

    It’s Week Five of high school football in the north country and the playoffs in Sections 3 and 10 will soon be upon us.

    There are some key matchups this week and a pair of Thursday night games to get us started.

    Let’s take a look at the upcoming high school football schedule for Northern New York this coming weekend.

    Thursday, October 3

    General Brown (4-0) at Little Falls (2-2), 7 p.m.: The Lions are looking to stay unbeaten while the Mounties are trying to get back on track after two consecutive losses. General Brown defeated Adirondack, 28-22, in a rematch of the Section 3 Class C final last weekend. Little Falls was downed, 33-6, by Canstota.

    Lowville (2-2) at Adirondack (1-3), 7 p.m.: The Red Raiders and Wildcats face off in a Class C East showdown. Lowville was edged, 15-8, by Holland Patent last weekend.

    Friday, October 4

    Indian River (3-1) at Watertown (3-1), 6:30 p.m.: The Wolves and Cyclones get together for the first time since the spring COVID season in 2021. Indian River outscored Westhill, 60-45, in its last game while Watertown has won three in a row after topping Fulton, 35-21.

    South Jefferson (2-1) at Cortland (2-2), 6:30 p.m.: It’s a Class B2 game between the Spartans and the Tigers Friday night. South Jeff was outlasted, 16-14, by Gouverneur last weekend. Cortland defeated Sherburne-Earlville, 44-34, last time out.

    Carthage (4-0) at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (2-2), 7 p.m.: It’s a Class B East game in Verona as the Comets try to stay unbeaten against the Red Devils. Carthage rolled past Camden, 41-24, while V-V-S lost, 39-14, to New Hartford.

    Canajoharie/Fort Plain (1-2) at Sandy Creek (2-1), 7 p.m.: The Comets host the Cougars in an impromptu nonleague game. Sandy Creek, who beat Pulaski 61-8 last week, was supposed to play Oswego. However, the Buccaneers didn’t have enough plays. Section 2’s Canajoharie/Fort Plain, who lost 41-6 to Glens Falls last week, comes in as a last-minute opponent.

    Beaver River (3-1) at Herkimer (0-4), 7 p.m.: The Beavers and Magicians square off in a Class D interdivision game. Herkimer lost 68-22 to Class D power Dolgeville last week.

    Canton (2-2) at Potsdam (4-0), 7 p.m.: The Golden Bears and Sandstoners play in a Section 10 Class B matchup. Potsdam won the nonleague encounter, 30-8, to start the season and beat Ogdensburg Free Academy, 12-6, last week. Canton lost, 20-18, to Massena last week.

    Massena (1-3) at OFA (2-1), 7 p.m.: The Red Raiders and Blue Devils take part in a Section 10 game Friday night in Ogdensburg.

    Plattsburgh (2-2) at Malone (1-3), 7 p.m.: It’s a Section 7 versus Section 10 game as the Hornets travel to play the Huskies. Plattsburgh blanked Moriah, 24-0, while Malone held off St. Lawrence Central, 14-12.

    Tupper Lake (3-0) at Morrisville-Eaton (2-1), 7 p.m.: It’s an 8-Man matchup between the Lumberjacks and Mavericks. Tupper Lake routed Thousand Islands, 46-0, while Morrisville-Eaton was beaten by Frankfort-Schuyler, 46-6.

    Clinton (3-0) at South Lewis (1-2), 7 p.m.: The Falcons host the Comets in an 8-Man interdivision game. Clinton defeated Cooperstown, 36-28. South Lewis broke into the win column for the first time in a while with a 38-20 victory over Utica Notre Dame.

    Saturday, October 5

    Thousand Islands (1-2) at Bishop Grimes (2-1), noon: The Vikings make the trip to Syracuse to play the Cobras in a Section 3 8-Man North/West Division game. Bishop Grimes held off Weedsport for an 18-14 victory.

    St. Lawrence Central (0-4) at Gouverneur (2-1), 1:30 p.m.: The Larries travel to Gouverneur to play the Wildcats in a Saturday afternoon matchup. Both teams will meet each other in the Section 10 Class C final at the end of the season.
