A man is dead after being shot inside a Berkeley shelter for unhoused people on Sunday, police said.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the shelter on Harrison Street, a couple blocks from the University Village area.

Not much is known yet about what led up to the shooting, just that the victim was shot at least twice.

Police say they are still searching for a suspect.

Yellow tape was surrounding the shelter.

All of its residents were outside while police determine what let up to the Sunday evening shooting.

"Our officers responded to the area of 7th and Harrison Street in reference to gun shots heard. Our officers responded to the shooting victim," said Kajahna Futch with the Berkeley Police Department.

This is Berkeley's fourth homicide of the year.

According to shelter residents who did not want to go on camera, the man who died was shot in his room.

Police arrived shortly after, but say he died at the scene.

"Our officers immediately began performing life saving measures. Unfortunately the victim succumbed to his injuries at the location," Futch said.

Now, the search is on for the shooter.

Berkeley police have not made any arrests yet, and they didn't have much to say about a potential suspect.

"At this point, we don't have any suspects in custody related to this, so the suspect did flee the scene," Futch said.

RYAN CURRY: "Do you know if the victim and potential suspect knew each other?"

KAJAHNA FUTCH: "I don't have that information."

They are asking if anyone has information to contact police right away.

The shelter residents were allowed to go back inside, however police were still on scene late Sunday and said they would be there throughout the night. Police said a third-party agency is working with the shelter residents while the police continue investigation.
