Man dies after rescuing 2 children from river at park in South Jersey
A man who saved two children from drowning in the Great Egg Harbor River in Atlantic County, New Jersey, has died.He has been identified as Pablo Hernando Cruz, 49, of Mays Landing.This incident happened at Weymouth Furnace County Park in Hamilton Township. Authorities say two children went swimming there, which is prohibited. There are multiple signs posted in English and Spanish warning people not to swim.The children started to experience some difficulty in the water, investigators say. New technology aims to keep guns out of the New York City subway system
Mayor Eric Adams says New York City's new weapons detection technology will be deployed in the subway system in the coming days.The city has been looking at technology it can use with the MTA's existing camera systems to detect weapons, specifically guns.This pilot program, first announced back in March, is the first step in that process.The city will set up freestanding screeners to spot guns and track how the system impacts normal commuter flow. Man killed in Tompkins Square Park identified, search for gunman continues
Police have identified the man who was killed in a drug-related shooting in Tompkins Square Park on July 12. (The video in the player above is from a previous report.)Police said 74-year-old Fermin Brito of Kips Bay is believed to have been the target of the drug-related shooting.Police said Brito has 13 prior arrests, mostly for drug dealing, with the last arrest being in 2012.He survived a stabbing in East Flatbush, Brooklyn in June, according to police.Detectives are looking into if the stabbing is related to his killing a month later.44-year-old Edwin Rivera was also struck by the gunfire in Tompkins Square Park, and is in stable condition.Police said it is unclear if Rivera was also the intended target, but is not cooperating with the investigation.Police are still looking for the gunman who they said appears to be an older Hispanic man wearing a bucket hat.Detectives are also looking into any connection to the March gunfire in the park.In response to the violence, police are maintaining a constant presence in the park.

Couple who fell in love at assisted living facility get engaged
A man and a woman living at the RiverSpring Aging Service Facility in Riverdale fell in love and now they are engaged.Eyewitness News was there Wednesday when 75-year-old Al Cappiello popped the question.Residents held a birthday party for 51-year-old Elizabeth Bly and she was surprised to find out it was actually a proposal.Cappiello, who had become her dear friend, proposed to Bly in a heartwarming moment.Cappiello has spent the last decade at RiverSpring, while Bly arrived only 14 months ago.Late night talks and heartfelt conversations led to the happy couple realize they are remarkably compatible.Bly lives at RiverSpring due to medical reasons and the need for rehabilitation.She has three grown children and five grandchildren, but she never got to experience the joy of a wedding or a marriage.This is also Cappiello's first marriage.The union of Bly and Cappiello is a reminder to everyone it's never too late to find love.The couple has not chosen a wedding date yet.
