People on Staten Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and New Jersey have reported hearing an unexplained boom that sounds like an explosion.

Some locals have hypothesized that the unexplained sounds might be thunder, an earthquake, or the rumbling of a big car.

A potential cause was mentioned by Assemblyman Michael Reilly (R-South Shore) on his Facebook page: Testing of military weaponry takes place in Little Egg Harbour, New Jersey.

NYPD Says There Are No Verified Reports Of Any Explosion

According to the NYPD, there have been no verified reports of an explosion.

An FDNY official said they found nothing when they arrived at 11:22 a.m. to investigate an explosion near Avenue X and Batchelder Street in Brooklyn.

There are no reports of an earthquake in the New York City region as of Tuesday from the USGS.

There are No Transformer Explosion Complaints Reported From Staten Island

Additionally, there have been no transformer explosion complaints from Con Edison on Staten Island. The Con Edison outage map shows that there are no known outages on Staten Island.

Notify NYC did not issue any warnings regarding the mystery sound.

Assemblyman Michael Reilly (R-South Shore) Responds To The News

He distributed a notice from the police department in Little Egg Harbour Township:

The loud boom could perhaps be connected to the alert given by the Little Egg Harbour Police Department in New Jersey.

Activity is scheduled to take place at the Warren Grove Air to Ground Range today from 10 to 11 a.m. The military weapons activity may have been audibly present throughout the entire duration.
