Police Arrested An NYC Parks Worker For Shooting At A Venezuelan Migrant

    2024-08-02

Authorities in New York City have arrested and charged a parks worker for the death of a Venezuelan immigrant in a Brooklyn park last month.

On Monday, police in New York City arrested 23-year-old Elijah Mitchell and charged him with murder, gun possession, and careless endangerment. His lawyer wouldn't say anything about the story.

Police reported receiving several 911 calls about gunfire near a migrant center in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, between 10:45 p.m. and midnight on July 21.

Three People Were Shot And Killed: NYPD

Two separate events, just minutes apart, resulted in the shooting and death of three people, according to the NYPD. One happened in front of a migrant shelter at 29 Ryerson St., and the other happened at a park on Flushing Avenue and Steuben Street.

The shooting on Ryerson Street claimed the lives of Enny DeJesus Urbina Mendez, 21, and Francisco Fuentes Rangel, 59, according to the police. Last week, authorities charged 26-year-old Jorge Said Benitez Villa with that crime.

An attack in the park killed Arturo Jose Rodriguez-Marcano, who was 30 years old. Mitchell, a park worker, faces only one charge for that crime.

NYPD Resources Report To A Local News Agency

A local news agency received information last week from NYPD sources suggesting a connection between both shootings and migrant gangs. But on Thursday, police said Mitchell went after Rodriguez-Marcano immediately. Since the two arrests, the police have not made any statements suggesting a connection between the crimes and gangs.

The mega-shelters in Clinton Hill were already dividing residents due to their impact on their quality of life. People who slept in the park as migrants also told a local news agency that the shootings had left them scared and shaken.
