The Wegmans grocery store company from New York is going to open a store at 675 Connecticut Ave. in Norwalk next summer. Most of the grocery store chain's 111 locations are in New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. The company said it is hiring...

The grocery store chain said in a statement that the Norwalk site will be a 92,000-square-foot supermarket with "restaurant-quality" prepared food and thousands of organic and healthy foods. The Norwalk site is the business's first step into the Connecticut market, but not into New England.

Wegmans already has stores open in and around Boston. There will be three new stores opening next year. They will be in Lake Grove, NY, and Rockville, MD.

    A Competitive Market

There are a lot of grocery stores in the state, so the news comes at a time when the market is very competitive. North American grocery store group Stop & Shop said last month that it was closing 32 stores, including five in Connecticut. Despite this, other food stores in the state are growing.

Due to rising food prices, more people are shopping at discount grocery stores like Aldi. They want to find cheaper names. Big-Y also said it would grow this year. The company is based in Massachusetts and has 33 stores in Connecticut.

Fortune magazine says that Wegmans, which was started in 1916 in Rochester, NY, is the sixth-best place to work in the United States. The company says it has competitive pay and benefits, extra pay on Sundays and holidays, and an employee grant program that helps both full-time and part-time workers pay for school.
