On Tuesday, Maria Branyas's family said that she had died. At 117 years old, she was considered the world's oldest person.

"Maria Branyas has left us," her family wrote in Catalan on Branyas' X account. She died in her sleep, in peace and without pain, which is what she wanted.

The Gerontology Research Group checks the information of people thought to be 110 or older. After the death of French nun Lucile Randon last year, Branyas was named the world's oldest known person.

Based on the Gerontology Research Group, Tomiko Itooka of Japan is now the next oldest person on their list. She is 116 years old.

    San Francisco Born Old Lady

On March 4, 1907, Branyas was born in San Francisco. Her family moved to New Orleans, where her father started a magazine. When she was young, they moved back to Spain. As Branyas spoke, she talked about crossing the Atlantic Ocean during the First World War.

Her X account is called "Super Catalan Grandma," it says, "I am old, very old, but not stupid."

Branyas tested positive for COVID-19 when he was 113 years old, but he didn't get the severe symptoms that killed tens of thousands of older Spaniards.

She was living in a care home in the Catalan town of Olot when she died.
