NYPD Commissioner's Resignation Raised Serious Questions About Eric Adams' Management

    2024-09-13

With the resignation of NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban on Thursday, concerns were raised about Mayor Eric Adams' capacity to handle the mounting lack of trust in his government and the reason more senior officials involved in probes have not faced pressure to step down.

Less than a week after it was revealed that federal investigators had confiscated the phones of several high-ranking officials, including Caban, the city's first Latino police commissioner announced his departure.

Although the mayor first stated that Caban was still capable of performing his duties, he noticeably refrained from endorsing the beleaguered commissioner during a press conference on Tuesday.

    The Nation's Biggest Police Agency

Although Caban has not been charged with anything, some have said that he was unable to properly head the nation's biggest police agency because of the lingering suspicion of a criminal probe. Similar mistrust has been directed at the mayor, who hasn't been charged with anything.

Speaker of the City Council Adrienne Adams told reporters on Thursday that the several probes had left the mayor's office in a state of "chaos."

Federal officials also served search warrants to Sheena Wright, the first deputy mayor, her partner, Schools Chancellor David Banks, and Phil Banks, the first deputy mayor of public safety, in addition to Caban.
