On the second level of a five-story apartment building situated on University Avenue between West 192nd Street and West 190th Street in the University Heights neighborhood, the fire broke out shortly after 5 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, a severe fire and flames were coming out of a second-floor apartment's windows.

    The Rear Fire Escape Rescue

According to FDNY officials, workers had to carry four people out of the building via the rear fire escape.

Pablo Abreu Rodriguez, 72, was among those who needed to be saved.

Nine civilians were inhaled, one of them, a 79-year-old woman, is very ill at this time.

One of the victims refused medical assistance, while the other eight were transferred to hospitals.

Since then, the fire has been contained, but many renters are unsure about their next steps.
